  21.    PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 16, 1993 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today
  22. announced that John J. O'Rourke has joined the company in the newly
  23. created position of general manager, Telecommunications Operations,
  24. and chief telecommunications architect.
  25.  
  26.    In his new post, O'Rourke will lead development of an integrated
  27. strategy to increase significantly HP's position in the
  28. telecommunications industry.  He reports to Joel S. Birnbaum, HP
  29. vice president for R&D and director, HP Laboratories.
  30.  
  31.    O'Rourke will chair HP's Telecommunications Council and will work
  32. closely with senior managers of HP Laboratories and the Test and
  33. Measurement and Computer Systems organizations.  O'Rourke and the
  34. council will identify new opportunities in the telecommunications
  35. industry and plan technology strategies.

  37.    Before joining HP, O'Rourke was assistant vice president, network
  38. architecture, and chief architect at Bellcore, a research facility
  39. funded by the seven regional Bell operating companies (RBOCs).  He
  40. directed the Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) program as well as
  41. the Information Networking Architecture program on behalf of the
  42. RBOCs.
  43.  
  44.    O'Rourke has more than 25 years' experience directing
  45. telecommunications programs at Bellcore and Bell Laboratories.  He
  46. directed planning and development teams for several widely deployed
  47. operations support systems and led Bellcore's Switching Technology
  48. Analysis organization.
  49.  
  50.    In addition, he led the investigation of the major public
  51. telecommunication network failures of 1991 and was a frequent public
  52. speaker on network reliability issues.  O'Rourke chairs the Steering
  53. Committee of the International Switching Symposium (ISS).
  54.  
  55.    "HP intends to be a key player in the telecommunications
  56. industry, and John O'Rourke will help lead us to that position,"
  57. said Birnbaum.  "Many exciting opportunities exist today in
  58. telecommunications -- particularly in bringing access to information
  59. of all types to people in their homes, offices and on the move.

  62. of information appliances, networking systems, and service platforms
  63. and components, both directly and with other leading suppliers,"
  64. Birnbaum added.

  78. Telekom Malaysia to Get Digital Monitoring System
  79. ************************************************************************
  80. HP Sales Malaysia with Singapore Computer Systems (SCS) won a US $4M 
  81. contract to install and implement a digital performance system (DPMS) 
  82. for Telekom Malaysia (TM). Hewlett Packard was the major sub-contractor 
  83. and will be actively involved in the management and implementation of 
  84. the project with SCS and TM. Implementation has been scheduled to be 
  85. complete by August 1994.
  86.  
  87. DPMS will help to provide continuous monitoring on the transmission
  88. performance to TM's network.
  89.  
  90. The contract includes the installation of seven HP9000 processors at the
  91. national control centers (NCC) and six regional control centers (RCC). A
  92. total of 30 386-based PCs, linked to the RCCs, will also be installed
  93. nationwide.

  95. The DPMS system is based on HP's E3560 digital performance monitoring 
  96. system which integrates continuous performance monitoring, alarm 
  97. collection and report generation. The DPMS can detect failures and 
  98. predict possible breakdown, allowing TM to take proactive measures 
  99. before critical or network failure occurs.

  101. The application software is based on X-Windows, OpenView and HP-UX.

  108. Norwegian Telecom Choses OpenView!
  109.  
  110. Norwegian Telecom has chosen OpenView as their strategic platform
  111. for management of their internal Unix-based computer network.  
  112. Their network consists mainly of HP, SUN and IBM Unix computers and 
  113. Cisco routers.
  114.  
  115. 30 OpenView Network Node Manager licenses will be used for
  116. management of the distributed network.
  117.  
  118. HP OpenView is chosen because it is viewed as "the best way to 
  119. DME", and its wide usability (CPM/CNM/TMN - SNMP/OSI).

  121. The competitors were SUN Net Manager, DEC Mcc and NMC 3000.

  126. HP 9000 is chosen as a preferred Unix platform for Norwegian
  127. Telecom.

  129. Norwegian Telecom has chosen HP 9000 workstations and systems and HP 
  130. 700RX X-stations as preferred products in their migration strategy to an 
  131. open system based infrastructure. HP is chosen because of our focus on 
  132. telecom, commitment to standards and price/performance leading products.

  134. The other Unix platforms already in this list are SUN, IBM Unix
  135. computers and Tandberg X-stations.

  137. The agreement is set up between Norwegian Telecom and HP's Channel
  138. Partner TBK (fully owned by Norwegian Telecom), and opens a whole
  139. new market segment for HP's Unix-systems.

  146. Norwegian Telecom has bought 10 HP 9000/800s running the Sybase database
  147. for the first phase of a new Customer Service project.
